Rigidity
What Is Rigidity?
Rigidity refers to muscles that are tense or inflexible, which can prevent them from stretching and relaxing properly, potentially causing pain and a decrease in range of motion. It can occur on only one side of the body, although some people experience it on both sides. Facial masking may also occur, as tightness can make it difficult for muscles to contract and relax, reducing the ability to make facial expressions, such as smiling.

How Rigidity Affects Daily Life
People can experience stiffness rigidity in terms of severity and presentation. If you have stiffness, you may face various movement-related challenges, which can make it difficult to move and perform everyday tasks. Stiffness can also cause pain and discomfort when changing positions.
Balance: You may have difficulty moving your arms while walking. This can cause instability and increase your risk of falls.
Daily Tasks: Getting dressed or writing can be difficult to do.
Fatigue: Persistent muscle tension can cause fatigue and a feeling of low energy. Lack of sleep due to difficulty getting comfortable at night can also increase fatigue.
How Can I Manage Rigidity?
There are different treatment options available to help with ridigity.
Physical activity:
Establish a daily routine to ensure you exercise, even on days when you don't feel motivated. Focus on exercises that emphasize muscle stretching and flexibility. Chair exercises and other low-intensity activities, such as yoga or tai chi, can help improve movement.
Therapies:
Occupational, physical, and speech therapy can help you create an exercise plan that fits your needs and addresses your challenges, suggest lifestyle and environmental modifications, recommend adaptive devices and equipment, and offer communication strategies.
Medicine
Talk to your doctor about your rigidity and, if other strategies are not working, ask about medications that can provide relief.
Baths (or Soaks):
Taking warm baths with Epsom salts can help relax your muscles, providing quick relief from stiffness and helping maintain muscle function longer.
