Postural Instability

What Is Postural Instability?

Postural instability occurs when a person has difficulty maintaining balance or postural control as a result of impaired postural reflexes—for example, reduced balance reactions, a tendency toward a flexed posture, and decreased trunk rotation. This instability can increase the risk of falls and reduce quality of life.

Strategies for Postural Instability

Therapy, such as physical and occupational therapy, can help focus on balance training, core strengthening, flexibility, and lifestyle modifications to reduce the risk of falls.

Lifestyle Modifications

  • Use assistive devices (canes, walkers) to improve functional mobility and promote independence.

  • Create a safe home environment:

    • Add better lighting Install grab bars in bathrooms and stairwells

    • Remove clutter and loose rugs

    • Arrange furniture to create clear paths

    • Adjust the height of objects in the kitchen, bathroom, etc.

  • Use additional adaptive equipment:

    • Portable toilet or bedside urinal for nighttime use

    • Shower chair

    • Raised toilet seat

There are many strategies to improve quality of life with a focus on safety. Talking to a therapist and completing a home safety assessment can help identify areas for improvement.
