Young ONSET Parkinson's

Appearance of symptoms in young onset Parkinson's (YOPD),

or early onset, can be seen between the ages of 21 to 50 years.

People with YOPD are more likely to have a genetic factors or clinical differences compared to those in late stage PD, meaning it can often be overlooked or go undiagnosed. Once diagnosed, the progression of the condition is generally slower in younger people, largely due to their better overall health and ability to participate in rehabilitation.

Managing the condition can be difficult for the person and their family members with a young onset diagnosis as they experience a different set of challenges and a longer journey than their peers with later-in-life diagnosed Parkinson's. They may also have concerns on how it will impact their personal goals, family responsibilities, and professional plans.

Like late onset PD, people with YOPD will experience similar symptoms including tremors in the arms, hands, legs, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and non-motor symptoms.
