Bradykinesia

What is Bradykinesia 

Bradykinesia is characterized by slower and smaller voluntary movements. People may experience challenges with carrying out daily activities. Bradykinesia may also cause freezing of movement which can increase fall risks. These difficulties may appear and disappear unexpectedly, making them unpredictable.  

How Can It Impact Daily Life

Movement

  • Difficulties initiating movements (standing up from a chair)

  • Dragging feet/ shuffling walk leading to fall risks 

  • Rolling over in bed

Fine Motor Activities

  • Finger tapping

  • Buttoning buttons 

  • Holding writing utensils 

Other

  • Decreased facial movement and blinking 

  • Stiff muscles 

  • Reduced arm swing when walking 

  • Postural changes 

  • Pain and muscle cramps 

Caring for Bradykinesia

Healthcare professionals can help identify the cause of this symptom and develop a treatment plan tailored to specific needs and challenges. Treatments for this symptom may differ from person to person. If you or a loved one notice changes with movement, talk to your healthcare provider.  

Treatment may include: 

  • Medication (new medication or adjustments to current medications)​

  • Exercise and staying active 

  • Therapy
